TSTA TORCH

Join Us!

YTA is pleased to continue our association's TSTA TORCH mentorship group for the 2021-2022 school year. This will be our 3rd year of implementation. So far, many of our TORCH members have grown as leaders in YTA. We've seen some TORCH members become ARs at their campuses, and we've even some running for a position as a YTA board of director. Our new educators are proving to be strong leaders.

If you are new to the profession, new to our district, or even new to YTA, we are here for you with anything you need! We help support you in some of the following ways:
  • Socializing/Networking with fellow members
  • Instructional Technology
  • T-TESS/SLO
  • NEA Member Benefits
  • Earning money for your classroom through DonorsChoose
  • Member Rights
  • Learning more about YTA/TSTA/NEA
  • Legislative Updates
  • Pandemic Updates
  • ...and more!

This year, we will hold our meetings both on Zoom and in person. Our first meeting will be at our YTA office. If you are interested please call the office at (915) 778-8222 for more information or to RSVP.

What is TORCH?

TORCH is TSTA/NEA's early career educator group. It is a group of educators in their first five years in the profession. TORCH stands for "Texas Organizers Reaching Children's Hearts." The group supports teachers and educational support professionals.

Why does TORCH exist?

Children and educators need strong champions!

Without support, educators leave the profession within the first five years. We need to help support educators so that they can become the strong leaders that advocate for students and for themselves.

FAQ

What is TORCH?
  • TORCH is TSTA/NEA's Early Career Educator group. TORCH is in it's third year. We held in-person meetings our first year, online meetings our second year due to the pandemic, and we will be hybrid for our third year as COVID-19 restrictions lift.
Does every local association have a TORCH group?
  • No. Our YTA TORCH group is in its third year of implementation. The goal for 2019-2020 was to have at least ten TSTA local associations start their own TORCH groups.
Will every TORCH group be the same?
  • No. While TORCH has the same goal in mind, every local association is different. Each local association will have different networking events, mentoring, communication methods, and resources to try to help support their ECEs.
How can TORCH support me if I am a new educator?
  • If your local association has a TORCH group, keep in mind that it will be their first year starting this group. Your input and communication with local leadership will help drive the support you need. Overall, here are some ways you may be supported:
    • Networking opportunities- You'll have opportunities to meet with other educators in your district.
    • Mentoring- Local association representatives and/or local board members will check-in with you to see how you are doing and if you need any support.
    • Leadership Training- ECEs need their voices heard and need representation at the local, state, and national levels in our association.
    • Resources- TORCH can guide you to resources provided by your local or TSTA/NEA.
Can I be a part of TORCH if I am already a veteran educator?
  • TORCH is intended to be a group comprised of ECEs. You can definitely help support our ECEs by volunteering to be a mentor. Ask your local association if there are any other ways to help.
